Unverferth House was Built with a Vision
The Unverferth House opened in May of 1989 as a tribute to the leadership, compassion, and accomplishments of Donald V. Unverferth, M.D., who died in 1988.

Born a Buckeye
Born in Dayton, Don became a record-holding quarterback for Woody Hayes.

Continued His Education
After graduating from O.S.U., Don wanted to help others. He continued his education at the University Medical School.

Served His Country
As Dr. Unverferth, Don served as a military physician.

Served His Community
Don specialized in cardiology, treating patients at O.S.U. from all over the country.

Led in Care
As a member of the O.S.U. Medical Center faculty, Don laid the foundation for their heart-transplant program.

Fostered a Legacy of Compassion
Every year, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center treats tens of thousands of patients, including more than 8,000 at its Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital. Many patients travel from outside Central Ohio. For these families who come from away, lodging is an enormous need: a place to be together with their loved ones, and close to the care they require. For more than thirty years, the Unverferth House (the “U House”) has provided hundreds of Wexner Medical Center patients and their families a home away from home, free of charge. A furnished apartment at the U House, located less than a mile from the medical campus, is more than a place to sleep after a long day of treatment. The U House offers relief for patients during the hardest weeks, months, or years of their lives. It provides a supportive community at an otherwise isolating time. Most importantly, the U House keeps families close to the world-class healthcare they need: ending their grueling commutes, saving time and financial resources, and ensuring they are minutes away from routine and emergency care. The Unverferth House continues Donald V. Unverferth’s life’s work, giving back to the community. He might have been born a Buckeye, but his legacy benefits all.
